Charlie had many friends primarily from his walks in Jacksonville. Oftentimes a car would drive by and notice Charlie. The car would continue on but Charlie would slow his pace convinced that the car was circling the block to come back and say "Hi". More than half the time he was right.
One Fall afternoon Charlie was downtown and a woman driving by rolled down her window and yelled out "Hi Charlie!" Charlie turned towards the voice and I yelled back "hi!" since Charlie didn't usually have much to say. Surprsingly the women appeared offended with my reply.I can only assume that she expected Charlie to answer her instead.
Charlie would meet new people every day. It was not uncommon for a person to say that he or she had heard about Charlie from a friend or friends and they were pleased when they finally got to meet him.
